As a composer, Morton is world renowned for creating immersive music and soundscapes for major public aquariums, including the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California, Loveland Living Planet Aquarium in Utah, and Aquarium of the Bay in San Francisco. His work is literally part of the exhibits — guests walk through galleries accompanied by his ambient, underwater-inspired scores, which are written to match the motion, mood, and personality of specific animals (for example, he’s talked about writing playful, high-energy music like “Penguin Boogie” after watching penguins). He has released multiple albums of this music, such as Music of the Monterey Bay AquariumJellies: Living ArtMysteries of the DeepThe Living Planet Aquarium SoundtrackAquarium of the Bay Soundtrack, and Music for Aquariums. These albums collect themes written for exhibits like Kelp Forest, Open Sea, Deep Blue, Seahorse Waltz, and Penguin Boogie, and are sold/streamed commercially (Apple Music, Spotify, Bandcamp, etc.).
The Monterey Bay Aquarium is often praised for the artistry of its exhibits — not just the visual design (like living kelp-forest tanks and jellyfish galleries), but also the original Douglas Morton soundtracks that help create a calm, immersive “underwater world” experience for roughly two million visitors a year.
